Doughs & Recipes

Doughs help promote not only physical development (fine and gross motor skills, hand-eye coordination), but cognitive and communication skills as well.
Talk to your children about the textures, colours, and shapes that they see. This calming type of play/activity allows children to express their thoughts through creativity. Watch their minds grow with this sensory experience!

Fairy Dough

It sounds as good as it feels! This is my favourite recipe for any kind of kids dough. It smells unbelievable and keeps your hands feeling super soft. It cleans so well! I use a spray bottle with soap, water, and some lemon essential oil and it comes right off of our placemats!

->Recipe:

  • 2 Parts Cornstarch
  • 1 Part Conditioner (Add in any food colouring that your children prefer)

Salt Dough

Salt Dough can be used for so many different crafts, including personalized gifts for Birthdays, Mother’s Day, etc!
I’ve used it to make my baby’s footprint which was then placed in a shadow box for Father’s Day!
-> Recipe:

  • 1 Cup Salt
  • 1 Cup Flour
  • 1/2 Cup Water

I mix the salt & flour together first, then slowly add the water. You may not need all of your water so add it slowly! Knead the dough together until it’s pretty smooth, roll it out, and cut into desired shapes! I bought small dinosaurs from Amazon and pressed them into the dough with my toddler.
Bake your shapes in the oven at 170 Degrees for 2 hours.
Let them sit overnight and paint away!

Fake Snow

My fake snow is easy to make, takes only 5-10 minutes, and the ingredients are probably sitting in your pantry! It’s also a fun activity to get your children involved in as long as there’s an adult to help with the cooking portion.

Once the fake snow batch is complete, I store it in an airtight container for about a week or two.

You will need:

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil

1. Throw all of these ingredients together in to a saucepan. On low-medium heat, constantly stir your mixture (which will go from thick to liquid in no time).

2. After about 2-3 minutes, the mixture will start to thicken. Keep stirring! Once the entire mixture forms a thick dough, dump it on to a silicon mat or wax paper to cool.

3. Once cooled, you’re ready to play! The dough breaks into snow, but can also be formed into shapes with your hands/moulds.

Try adding a drop of lavender essential oil for older children to create a calming sensory activity!

Mud Bath

This is a great summer activity! You can replace the toy dinosaurs with cars or farm animals too.
->Recipe: Water, Cornstarch, and Cocoa Powder!

Start off with any size bowl or container with room temperature water. I like to slowly add in tablespoons of cornstarch one at a time until my mixture is almost the consistency of slime. Also, you only need about a tablespoon or so of cocoa powder!
I also threw in some toothbrushes in to the bath of warm water and soap.

Here’s a fun fact – the cornstarch and water mixture doesn’t splash!
