Mmmm Donuts

Today is the day.

In this house, every Saturday is donut day. Yes, donut day.

Let’s rewind about 30 years ago when my dad took my sister and I to Wendy’s for lunch, followed by a delicious ice cream cone or cinnamon bun depending on the weather. Every Saturday for years and years.

So a couple of months ago, it hit me. We need more traditions (“Traditions, traditions….traditions!!”)! A little Broadway humour to start the morning, why not? Where was I…ah yes, traditions! Friday night is always, and I repeat always, pizza night. I look forward to the delicious flavours that Panefresco offers to the general public, but more importantly, that I have a night off from cooking. No dishes. Little cleaning up to do afterwards.

And then Saturday morning comes. The delicious smell of coffee smacks me in the face as I prep our mugs of liquid gold, awaiting the arrival of my husband and toddler to come bearing gifts of fried deliciousness. The Three Wise Men should have considered bearing gifts of Granddad’s donuts to that manger.

…They’re really good donuts, okay??

The theme in today’s post if you haven’t guessed it already, is making some sort of tradition with your own family or something to look forward to at least one day a week. It boosts moral in this house, that’s for sure. All jokes aside, my kid really looks forward to it. He puts so much pride into getting ready really early in the morning with his Daddy. They choose a special outfit, put on their hats and sunglasses together, and as soon as they get home I’m greeted with not only the fresh smell of fried happiness, but also delightful shouts of “Mommy I bought you a donut!!!”

Try it. You’ll thank me later.
